The university's Preventing Alzheimer's with Cognitive Training (PACT) study, funded by the National Institute on Aging, uses digital brain training exercises to see if they can reduce the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia such as Alzheimerās disease. The study is seeking more than 1,200 participants in the Sarasota area to join.

Researchers at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, located at the University of South Florida, successfully tested a protein that has the potential to aid in the development of a protein-based therapy for patients with ALS, a progressive nervous system disease, also known as Lou Gehrigās disease, that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

USF professor: Statin use not justified for healthy people with high cholesterol
New research from David Diamond, a neuroscientist and cardiovascular disease researcher in the Department of Psychology at the University of South Florida showed LDL alone has āa very weak associationā with heart disease and stroke. Their review went further, showing that when people with high LDL and optimal triglycerides and HDL were given a statin, there was no benefit.
As one of four data generation projects funded by NIHās Bridge2AI, this multi-institution project ā co-led by the University of South Florida and Weill Cornell Medicine ā will bring together medical, voice, AI, engineering, and ethics experts to create a human voice database using privacy-preserving AI, giving doctors a new tool for diagnosing conditions known to have associations with voice alterations.

USF Health microbiome expert Hariom Yadav, PhD, has received a grant from the National Institute on Aging to help determine if a common medication can restore microbiome diversity in older patients who have a form of heart failure and, thus, prevent the subsequent problems that tend keep these patients inactive and cause their conditions to worsen.
