Essential training: The value of Basic Economic Development Courses for emerging professionals

In the ever-evolving economic development landscape, having a solid foundation is essential for professionals striving to drive growth and innovation in their communities. Basic Economic Development Courses provide the crucial groundwork, equipping participants with the skills and insights needed to earn the most prestigious credential in the field, the Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) certification.

For nearly 50 years, USF has offered a BEDC to prepare professionals in the field to advance their careers and qualify to sit for the CEcD exam.

It is the only course in Florida accredited by the International Economic Development Council, making it a prime opportunity for aspiring economic developers in the Sunshine State. Additionally, the course is accredited by the Sun Coast Section of the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association.

Offered only once per year, the next session of USF’s BEDC is scheduled for November 12-14 at the Centre Club on 123 S. West Shore Boulevard in Tampa, FL. Registration closes on October 29, so interested individuals are encouraged to .

ADVANCE YOUR CAREER

The CEcD credential is a stepping stone for professionals with goals to climb to higher-level roles that demand advanced expertise. The certification not only enhances credibility but also provides a competitive edge in the job market. Employers are on the lookout for the CEcD credential, making certified professionals stand out among other candidates, increasing their chances for interviews and landing their desired roles.

“Aspiring economic developers have to start with some basic professional development, and the BEDC lays a good foundation to build your knowledge base and skillsets in economic development,” said Craig Richard, president and CEO of Tampa Bay Economic Development Council.

INCREASE YOUR EARNING POTENTIAL

Beyond career advancement, the CEcD certification also opens the door to significant financial benefits. Certified Economic Developers earn, on average, nearly $25,000 more annually than their non-certified colleagues. Over a 40-year career, this difference could amount to an additional one million dollars in earnings.

EXPAND YOUR PROFESSIONAL NETWORK

Earning the CEcD credential also connects professionals to an exclusive network of more than 1,200 economic development experts who have achieved this certification. This network offers abundant opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and professional growth.

MAKE A LASTING IMPACT

Participants in USF’s BEDC will gain insights into best practices related to business retention, strategic planning, small business development, neighborhood development, real estate development, workforce development, and managing economic development organizations.

With a deeper knowledge of the foundational elements of economic development, CEcD professionals are better equipped to make a meaningful impact on the well-being and quality of life of people who live in the communities they serve.

“The BEDC offers a well-rounded view of the different subcategories of economic development, whether it’s entrepreneurship, marketing, research, or business development,” said Richard, who has worked in the field for nearly 30 years. “It provides an understanding of workforce development when pursuing business development opportunities, and community development as it relates to economic development and the differences between each area. Once participants get a sense of the different concentrations in the field, they can focus on what they are most interested in.”
